Born in Caernarfon in 1933, where he still lives and paints,
William Selwyn studied at Bangor College and taught in Caernarfon until he retired in
1990 to become a full time painter. His work is intensely atmospheric and
revolves around the landscapes of Gwynedd, local farm workers, fishermen on the
Menal Straits and also scenes of Venice where he visits frequently.
In 1998 he
was a 3rd Prize winner in the Singer & Friedlander Sunday Times
competition. This gives an indication of his increasing popularity and he is fast
becoming one of Wales' leading artists, not only in Wales but elsewhere.
According to Sir Kyffin Williams: "I believe William Selwyn
to be one of Wales's finest Watercolourists. It is wonderful to see how his
painting has just blossomed since he retired from teaching. It is atmospheric
and highly accomplished work".
